Resonance of the Huqin · New Voices from South Australia
Resonance of the Huqin · New Voices from South Australia
Silk Strings is dedicated to fostering intercultural artistic exploration by collaborating with artists across cultures and creative disciplines—including music, dance, and visual arts—and by encouraging new compositions written specifically for huqin instruments.
Proudly funded by Arts South Australia, this concert showcases the ensemble’s latest venture: a program of new commissioned works by four acclaimed South Australian composers— Belinda Gehlert, Jakub Jankowski, Satomi Ohnishi, and Hilary Kleinig.
These composers were invited to write for up to five musicians, including one to three huqin alongside instruments of their own choosing, responding to themes of South Australian landscapes and soundscapes, Sinophone worlds, and global musical dialogues.
The program also features original compositions by Silk Strings members themselves—David Dai, Felix Wang, and Lester Wong—whose intimate knowledge of the huqin and rich cultural perspectives bring fresh, expressive voices to the repertoire.
By combining traditional Chinese pieces, newly commissioned Australian works, and original ensemble compositions, this concert forms a compelling musical trifecta—representing Silk Strings’ vision for future collaborations and their growing identity as an innovative Australian music ensemble.
